News from the 1-2 Class
The 1-2 class is blasting off our year! These past few weeks we’ve been building our community. Everyone has written their hopes and goals for the year. We created our class rules to help us reach our goals. To make sure we know how to behave, we’ve been modeling the correct way to interact with one another, collecting kind words, and learning the difference between toys and tools for learning. Another way we’ve been building our community is by assigning jobs to each member of our class. This added responsibility allows for each child to feel directly connected to our classroom. To learn more about each other, each member of the community brought in a paper bag with five items in it. The class had to guess who the items belonged to.
Do you know what happens to the human body when one enters space? The 1-2 class is soon going to find out! The class has been writing and drawing in their Moon Journal at home. Within their Moon Journal, the children complete an observation of the moon and record what they see. If there is no moon to observe, the children use their imaginations and write creatively about the moon. Last Friday, the children used their cooking skills to create a delicious Moon Crater Cake! This cake looks similar to the surface of the moon. We’ve also been busy collecting facts from reading books and watching videos about the Sun, Earth and Moon. The collected facts are going to be used as part of our “Solar System Jeopardy” game. In addition to these activities, the students have created their own “Space Museum” which features spaceships made from Legos and other objects that relate to the solar system theme. Students have been using their imaginations to draw and write about traveling to different places in our solar system. Looking ahead, we’ll be learning about the planets then creating our own planets, studying constellations and taking a field trip or two.
Have a great month –
Jennifer
