News From The 3 – 4 Class
We have had an eventful and fantastic beginning to our school year. We are really excited to begin our scientific investigations into the “Wonderful World of Weather!” During our trip to the Capital News 9 studios, the students had a great time trying out weather forecasting on the actual set used by our local meteorologists. We found that it is not as easy as it looks trying to point out areas in front of the “green screen.” We also learned that if one wears green clothing, their body becomes invisible. This was a lot of fun!
This month we will be learning about the various instruments in our Weather Station. We will be using the barometer to measure air pressure, which is an excellent predictor of weather patterns. The psychrometer measures humidity or the amount of water vapor in the air. The rain gauge will measure the amount of precipitation we have had so that we can compare it with previous months and previous years in order to draw valuable conclusions. The high-tech thermometer not only measures the current temperature, but also measures the low and high temperatures of the day. The anemometer measures wind speed. We will be using the Beaufort Scale to determine the force of the current wind conditions. The students will be keeping a weather journal where they will be charting all the data gathered from the various instruments in our weather station.
We are very excited to begin our investigations and will soon be ready to take all the data and analyze and interpret that information in order to make weekly weather forecasts during Community Morning Meetings.
Enjoy your fall –
Lara
