October 2009

News from the Head of School

We have had such a wonderful “back to school” time this year! The children settled into their routines quickly and dove right into their new academic challenges. Because most of the children know their teachers from previous years, we are really able to get right to the curriculum here at the Taylor School.

I am excited to report that we have just launched our new website! The site was designed by Association Development Group, Inc. (ADG), which is owned by Joe and Kathy Van De Loo. Jon Briccetti was also involved as he has provided tech support and his company, Troy Web Consulting, designed our previous website. Alisha Clark provided the spectacular photographs that really show our students celebrating their learning at the school. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this new website possible.

There are plans for additional features on the site so feel free to keep checking for changes. It is not uncommon once a new website is posted to have a functional issue or two, for example, a link that gets broken.  Please let us know if any issues like these come up.

On a different note, Kelly and I attended a NYSAIS (New York State Association of Independent Schools) training last week on the H1N1 virus (swine flu). It was extremely informative as we heard from some of the schools that were closed as a result of the activity last spring. I am working on a comprehensive plan for the prevention of spreading illnesses at the school as well as developing contingency plans for the school and parents if we experience a large outbreak this fall/winter. The emergence of this virus has caused much controversy in schools and work places across the country. There is no shortage of strong opinions and I am sure that will be the case in our school community. Our goal is to plan as best we can for every scenario and ensure that it is communicated to everyone. Any feedback or suggestions are welcome.

On a lighter note, I would like to welcome two people to the Taylor School board of trustees. Todd Matthew and Anne de Noronha were accepted by the board this month. I look forward to working with them. The board is currently working on the completion of our new strategic plan, which is being reviewed by our committees for feedback and the development of work plans. If you are interested in serving on a committee, please feel free to give me a call. We can always use the help!

Lastly, I want to let people know that our open house for prospective families will be on Saturday, October 24, from 10a.m. to noon. It is always extremely helpful for our potential future parents to talk to current parents about the school. Our students love to show off our school and are always impressive in their poise and confidence. Our families are our best ambassadors! Please mark your calendars and stop by the open house to help us keep our school strong.

Happy fall!

Wendy
