April 2009

News from the 1-2 Class

1-2The month of March has gone by so fast, but the 1-2 class is excited spring is finally here!  We ended our unit on Ancient Egypt in the beginning of March with our sarcophagus project!  The students worked hard carefully designing their sarcophaguses.  After we painted we stuffed them and put them on display in the classroom. Everyone enjoyed looking at each other’s unique work.

We began our next theme study of solids, liquids, and gases.  During the month of March the students have been learning about different states of matter.  We have learned how to make predictions and record observations.  One of our favorite activities so far is “Don’t Melt So Fast, Ice!”  The students made predictions about what will happen to a piece of ice over time.  We came up with a class plan for keeping our cup of ice from melting.  We were surprised on how long it took the ice to melt!

In writing we began working on our friendly letter unit.  We are learning about the main components of letter writing.  Each student is in the process of writing a friendly letter to Mrs. Koleszar.  The students are excited to finish their letters and send them to Mrs. Koleszar.

1-2During the month of March we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day.  We ate green bagels and enjoyed listening to stories based on this wonderful holiday.  During writing, we created stories about leprechauns and their adventures with a pot of gold. The students were able to show their creative side through writing.

In the upcoming month of April the 1-2 class will continue exploring the states of matter with hands-on activities.  We are also looking forward to taking a field trip to CMOST to participate in the molecularium program.  In the workshop we will learn about the size of atoms and molecules, the three states of matter, and then to wrap up the workshop students will create their own polymers.

Have a great month –
Kourtney La Du
