April 2009

News from the 3-4 Class

3-4We’ve officially entered into our study of ancient Greece. So far, we’ve completed the outreach trunk activities. We’re also created reproductions of coins from each of the city-states. Currently, each child is working on creating a life-size drawing depicting themselves as a god or goddess. First, each child selected a deity that they were interested in learning more about. Then, they each researched their deity in order to compose a riddle. In art, the students will be creating a mask to place over the drawing. This exciting project will be on display in the hall. For our next inquiry lesson we’ll be holding a mock trial based on the Greek tragedy of Antigone.

Our young authors have been busy producing a variety of poetry. After studying the 3-4forms and reading poetry by famous poets like Jack Prelutsky, Robert Frost, and Emily Dickenson, the students have skillfully created their own poems including: limericks, color poems and poetry about what our hands can do. Students have selected some of their best work to share with the community during morning meeting.

Who do you look to for inspiration? The writers in Miss Philbin’s group have just written a non-fiction report, The Person I Admire. Each student chose a person they admire, created a web of qualities the person possesses, created questions then conducted an interview.  Once the information was gathered, each child wrote their piece. These works are on display in the 3-4 classroom.

Have a great month –
Jennifer and Lara
