April 2010
News from the 1-2 Class
We’re heading to Ghana! The 1-2 Class is learning all about the various tribes in Africa. In music, the students are learning song and dance from Ghana. In class, the children are building their own drums. We have begun our discussion about symbols in art and the children have been exploring the ideas of what symbols are. The drums will be painted with Adinkra symbols that the children have selected based on their personalities. In April we will have a musician come in and teacher the children a few Afro-Cuban rhythms!
The final unit of study is the “Plant to Seed”, which the children will be discovering all about what a seed and plant need to grow. The class will be discovering all aspects about seed and plants through an online WebQuest. A WebQuest is a controlled, online learning experience that is created by an educator so that the children can explore a concept. The WebQuest includes articles, videos, songs and other support material to help children learn about the chosen subject.
As a culminating activity for the Seed to Plant Unit, the children will be organizing our school garden. This is a very exciting activity for the children and offers a way for them to apply their knowledge to their own lives. The 1-2 Class will also be working with a local gardening expert from the community to obtain more specific knowledge about their challenging task.
Happy spring!
