April 2010
News from the 3-4 Class
We have started a new scientific study of chemistry in a unit called Powders and Crystals. This unit introduces students to the techniques scientists use to study unknown substances, a process called chemical analysis. Students were presented with six unidentified white substances and were challenged to differentiate between them using their senses of sight, smell, hearing, and touch. They discovered that three of the substances have a crystalline structure, and three are powders. We briefly discussed the atomic structure in these substances as we took a closer look at the Periodic Table. We also observed how each substance reacts with water, vinegar, iodine, bromthymol blue (BT B), and heat. Based on our observations, the students will then be challenged to identify the substances in four mystery mixtures based on the chemical reactions they have. It’s going to be great!
Later on this month we will begin our country study Mexico! We will be learning about the culture and what life is like in Mexico. We will learn about the geography, history, language, food, clothing, famous landmarks, games, festivals, dance celebrations, and so much more. Ultimately we will be preparing for the Country Parade on Wednesday, May 12th. This event will be taking place during the school day. Each class will be learning about a different country and during the parade the students will be able to visit the other “countries” and experience a little of the culture in each of the classrooms. It’s going to be great!
Have a wonderful month!
