News from Kindergarten
Last month went by fast! We’ve been busy working on developing our writing skills. The class began “free writing” in their journals this month. We learned the skill of brainstorming to assist us in developing topics to write about. The class was excited because they could write about whatever they wanted. It is truly amazing to watch each of them apply the new skills they are beginning to acquire.
The kindergarten class listened to their first read aloud chapter book this week. The book is Ready, Freddy! Thanksgiving Turkey Trouble by Abby Klein. Before reading we discussed how we should try to make a picture in our minds as we listen to the story. It was amazing to watch them really listen to the story and understand the humor. In connection with our read aloud each student made a pinecone turkey during a “Fun Friday” activity. The pinecones smelled like cinnamon and each student enjoyed bringing the turkey home as a holiday decoration.
Recently, during theme the class investigated more about Sun and Shadows. The class made a silhouette of their hands. We compared the differences and similarities between our real hand and the silhouette we made. Another day we further investigated what happens to the shadow of an object when we move the object closer to the light and further away from the light.
This month one of our math lessons involved baking! While making our pumpkin bars for the Taylor School Harvest Feast we learned about the different ways to measure ingredients. We talked about why it is a good idea to follow the recipe and not add too much or too little of one ingredient. We all had an important job when mixing the ingredients! We enjoyed sharing our treat at the school harvest feast.
In the upcoming month we are looking forward to creating our first class book! The class book will be based on the book Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews. We will look at the way the writer incorporated sets of 1 to 10 dots into a picture. Each student will select the number of dots they will use to create a picture of everyday things just as the author did in the book.
Warm wishes and enjoy your holiday season!
