February 2009

News from the 5-6 Class

The New Year is moving along very rapidly!  Winter is in full swing, and we are busy learning lots of new and exciting things.

5-6 ClassOur study of the novel Dealing with Dragons has been progressing beautifully.  The students have been very insightful during our group discussions, and in the completion of their comprehensive reviews.  Once we have finished reading the novel, we will be involved in an exciting culminating activity to celebrate the conclusion of this wonderful story.  I would like to remind and encourage all the students to read on in The Enchanted Forest Chronicles.  Dealing with Dragons is only the first book in this fantasy series.

In January, the 5/6 class also began a study on ancient Chinese history.  The students participated in a number of activities both as individuals and as group members.  They constructed vertical banners that helped to explain the Chinese view of the universe: cardinal direction, colors, animals, seasons, and numbers.  They completed a map of China and its surrounding areas, participated in the planning of a Chinese Virtue Tableau Presentation, and were able to select and write their own Chinese names.  The 5/6 students also learned about the history of The Great Wall of China, and were able to   show off their knowledge by participating in The Great Wall of China gameboard.

During the month of February we will continue our study of ancient China.  The 5-6 Classstudents will learn about the history of the famous trade route, the Silk Road, and the Forbidden City.  We will be engaged in many exciting learning activities such as 3-D geography, creating billboards to advertise a product or idea that came to the west from China, writing an original story of a fictitious traveler along the Silk Road, designing and flying Chinese kites, and writing lantern poetry.

I am looking forward to another thrilling month of learning!  I hope you all enjoy your February vacation and stay warm!
