News from the 1-2 Class
Are you ready for a thrilling voyage through the solar system? The 1-2 class sure hopes so! The class will be performing the play “Vacation to Mars” in a few short weeks! The students have been busily designing and making their own costumes and practicing their roles. Being in a play is an exciting way to increase reading fluency and expression. It has been amazing to see some of the gains the young performers in the 1-2 Class have made since starting the play November. The students are now focusing on their stage presence and diction. These crucial public speaking skills are started in the first grade and reinforced throughout subsequent years at the Taylor School.
Our next unit of study will be “The Senses”. In this unit, the students will use the scientific method to complete an inquiry study of their own senses. These hands-on minds-on experiences will enable children to develop an understanding of how their body works. The students will learn how to experience items through one sense at a time to sharpen their observation and descriptive writing skills. As a culminating activity, the students will design their own “sensory board”. This board will be an interactive piece of artwork that encourages the viewer to interact with the piece by using their senses.
Being a part of a learning community includes interacting with students across the grade levels. Periodically, the students in the 1-2 class are able to spend time with other class in the school. These meetings may include elements of theme learning or to enjoy the company of others. A few weeks ago, the class joined forces with the kindergarten class to perform the song “With My Own Two Hands” at Morning Meeting. This song was chosen to honor Martin Luther King and to help the children envision ways they could make a positive impact on the world. This month, the class will be celebrating their hard work play by attending a cast party hosted by the prekindergarten class. The students will enjoy a snack and chat with their younger friends. It’s these types of interactions that make the Taylor School community strong and supportive.
Have a great month –
Jennifer
