February 2010
News from the 5-6 Class
The New Year is moving along very rapidly! Winter is here in full swing, and the 5/6 class is busy learning lots of new and exciting things.
The students have been actively engaged in a genre study on biographies. They completed a comprehensive reading unit consisting of biographies about amazing individuals. The students also selected and read a biography about a famous person of their choice. While reading their biography, they collected extensive information about the individual they were studying. This month, the students will take the data they gathered and construct a timeline, informational tri-fold display and write a speech about their famous person. On February 10, the students’ dedication and hard work will be displayed at our class “Wax Museum.” On the day of the museum, the 5/6 students will dress and act the part of their famous individuals. They will present scripts and show their informational tri-fold displays to all the museum visitors. All members of the Taylor School community are welcome to come to our “Wax Museum.” It is going to be a wonderful learning opportunity for all!
In January, the 5/6 class began a new social studies theme unit on immigration. The students began studying the years of 1890-1954 when millions of people immigrated to the United States through the famous immigration station, Ellis Island. They learned about why these individuals and families left their homelands, and their hopes and their dreams they had for a new life in America. To further personalize our research on immigration, each student investigated where their ancestors came from by completing a Four Generation Direct-Ancestry Chart, which showed family members back at least three generations, and by completing an oral interview with an older member of their family. Many of the students discovered that they had great-grandparents who immigrated to the United States of America in the early 1900’s. During the month of February, we will use the information the students collected about their lineage and create family trees, write essays about the special older member of their families that they interviewed, and plot their ancestors’ origins on a large world map.
February may be a short month, but is going to be full of many wonderful learning opportunities. I hope you are all enjoying the cool temperatures and have a wonderful February break.
