News from Kindergarten
The Kindergarten is buzzing with sight words! We continue to build our understanding of sight words by engaging in many hands on activities. Recently we went “fishing” for sight words. During centers students took turns using a fishing pole with a magnet to catch fish with sight words on them. Pairs of students enjoyed working cooperatively together to fish sight words out of the pond and find the match for each word.
Singing and dancing is part of our daily routine. In the past couple weeks we have been using ribbon dancers to help sky write our numbers while singing Dr. Jean’s song “Chant and Write.” In math, we also continue to build on our understanding of patterns. This month the students used chain links to make more complicated patterns. Some of our chain link patterns were as long as our work tables and some as long as the room!
We enjoyed working with the 1/2 class this month. We worked together to learn a song that reminded us of all the important work Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did for our country. The most exciting part was when we sang our newly learned song alongside the 1/2 class to the students of the Taylor School during morning meeting.
Our theme this month is self, family and community. We began our unit by creating self portraits of ourselves by using craypas. Before creating our portrait we talked a lot about what makes us similar and different from other friends in the classroom. We learned that our differences are what make us so unique and this is a wonderful thing!
In the upcoming month the Kindergarten class is looking forward to learning how to subtract. In the past month we have been working hard with addition skills and are eager to further our mathematical knowledge.
I hope you are enjoying your new year! Thank you for sharing your children with me!
