February 2010
News from Preschool
Preschool is certainly a very busy place! The children continue to learn and grow and it is exciting to watch the new signs of maturity and independence emerging daily. There’s no holding these children back as they love to expand on everything we introduce. What fun we are having!
In the early days of February we will complete our study of forest animals and bears. Hopefully we’ll get some significant snow so we can tuck in some of the additional winter science experiments we’d planned for January. Valentine’s Day will be the next topic on the agenda and our dramatic play area will include the addition of a small Post Office. This always generates a lot of pre-writing/writing as the children create the mail for the Post Office.
As the children’s attention span in the group has increased, we have been doing more literacy activities. Recognizing each others name, letters on the calendar, and initial consonants on book titles and author’s names, all occur as we gather each day. The group is becoming much better listeners to favorite stories as well as new ones, and enjoy “reading” them in our book time following snack. We will continue to retell and dictate stories and will continue to reinforce the importance of the written word as writing, sorting, and sharing cards with each other will be a part of the focus on friendship that leads into Valentine’s Day. Parent Party invitations and specific plans for our class Valentine celebration will be in your child’s folder.
During the last week in February (after the winter break), our Post Office will change to a Pet Store, and we’ll compare and contrast pet animals with the wild forest animals we have been learning about in January.
Happy Valentine’s Day,
Karen and Lisa
