March 2010

News from the 5-6 Class

Will March come in like a lion and go out like a lamb? From the weather reports we Susan Odell Taylor Schoolhave been given it seems this pattern will hold true.  Let’s hope the snow will come to an end, and spring will make its appearance soon!

During the month of February the 5/6 students were busy preparing for our living Wax Museum.  Each student read a biography on a famous individual of their choice.  They prepared speeches, timelines and informational displays.  All their hard work and dedication made our living Wax Museum a huge success!  In February the students also concluded a social studies unit on immigration.  They studied the years of 1890-1954 when millions of people immigrated to the United States through the famous immigration station, Ellis Island.  The children researched their ancestors’ origins, and created family trees on the information they gathered.  The students completed a DBQ, Document-Based Question, where they interpreted historical records and expressed their understanding of the history of immigration to America through a well-written essay.

Susan Odell Taylor SchoolIn March we will begin a comprehensive unit on the novel, From The Mixed-Up Files Of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, by E. L. Konigsburg.  This wonderfully written Newbery Medal honored book, coincides beautifully with our new book study on “Award-Winning Novels.”  Each student will select a book that has won a recognized award, and complete a book project on it.   The students will also be concluding a science theme unit on “Healthy Decisions.”  Through a variety of hands-on learning experiences, the 5/6 students will understand how to use the Food Pyramid as a guide to help them choose a healthful diet that is right for them.  They will discover the importance of healthy eating and proper nutrition and the effects it has on their body.  With this knowledge the students will begin to assess the nutritional value of foods, and if and how it would be beneficial to leading a healthy lifestyle.

In March, the 5/6 class will also begin preparing for their International Country Fair.  Each student will select a country and begin researching it in depth.  They will be busy creating maps, flags, picture displays, and a float to represent their country.  They will also be researching and learning about their country’s culture and history in order to write a written report and prepare for an oral presentation.  Through presentations full of facts, pictures, music, guest speakers, food and dance, I am confident this International Country Fair is going to be phenomenal.

March is going to be exciting! I look forward to leading the students through this multifaceted adventure. Have a wonderful month!
