News from the 1-2 Class
During the month of April we continued investigating our theme Solids, Liquids and Gases. We worked hard on putting together our class science fair project that was based around our theme. Our science fair project, “What Is a Gas?” demonstrated our observations that air takes up space and can change shape to determine the characteristics of gases. Using a funnel and a bottle we placed the funnel in the bottle. We then sealed the neck of the bottle to the funnel with clay. When we poured the colored water all at once into the funnel we found that most of the colored water stayed in the funnel and did not go down into the bottle. We thought this was very interesting! We then decided to loosen up the clay seal from around the neck of the bottle and funnel. We made predictions about what we thought would happen. We found that the colored water went through the funnel into the bottle. We learned that air could get out of the bottle around the neck of the funnel, and the water could get in through the funnel.
Before spring break we took our field trip to CMOST to participate in the molecularium program. We found that we knew a lot about solids, liquids and gases and were able to add to our knowledge. The trip was exciting because we also had the opportunity to make “glueck.”
After returning from spring break we began our new theme Plant and Animal Populations. We began the unit by creating a KWL chart (what we know, what we want to know, and what we learned) about plants and animals. We look forward to filling out the “what we learned” section after we finish the unit. We planted a variety of seeds; we will be watching them as they grow and develop over the next few weeks. We are looking forward to learning more about organisms with the delivery of our ants, daphnia, aphids, fruit flies and lady bugs. The organisms will help us learn about the stages that a living thing goes through during its life (life cycle).
On PJ Read-In Day we celebrated our talents as authors and poets. We each created a poem about spring. We went outside as a class and individually recorded our observations about spring using our five senses. The list of words we gathered helped create our spring poems. We enjoyed sharing our poems with the other classes.
We look forward to an action-packed end of the school year. It will be filled with lots of learning and fun!
Have a great summer -
