We can’t believe how fast this school year is going by. Over the next few weeks we’ll be very busy preparing for our play The Universe and Other Stuff. This musical is a hip-hop happenin’, history lesson presenting a fresh perspective as to who, what, when and how this crazy planet and its people came to be. From dinosaur extinction to Columbus, from the wheel to space exploration, they’re all rediscovered in this clever, chaotic, comical cataclysm of creativity. From the rockin’ “Big Bang” opening number all the way to the stirring big finally anthem, you’re bound to be sitting on the edge of your seat.
What was Troy like 100 years ago? To answer this question, our class will be taking a series of field trips in order to explore the history of Troy. First, the Rensselaer County Historical Society will be providing an outreach experience. During this visit, the students will be placed into groups to learn about local history through a variety of interesting primary artifacts produced from this time period. After researching each item, the students will then present short skits to teach their peers about the item. Our next experience is an outing featuring an archeological dig program called “Unearth the Hudson Valley: A 400 Year Story Through Archeology” presented though the Albany Heritage Visitors Center. Within this action filled adventure, we will be learning about the tools and techniques archeologists use to unearth artifacts. And our final experience will be a walking tour of downtown Troy. During this trip, we will be directly observing the changes that Troy has undergone in the last 100 years by contrasting today’s buildings with those of the past. As a culminating activity, we’ll be completing data based questions (DBQ) addressing the changes that Troy has experienced through time.
Have a great summer and keep reading!
