May/June 2009

News from the 5-6 Class

It is hard to believe that the 2008-2009 school year will soon be coming to a close. Susan Odell Taylor School It seems like only yesterday we began this amazing year of fun and learning.

The students have worked very diligently throughout the month of April.  They did a wonderful job of publishing their collection of poems in a beautiful accordion book, which they will be sharing with the whole school community.  I am very proud of their dedication to this poetry unit.

In April, the 5/6 class also began a biology unit on DNA and genetics.  The students started exploring and investigating the elements that shape the characteristics of our features and our genetic makeup.  Through scientific investigations and inquiries, they have started to learn all about the basic building blocks of life, cells.  In May, the students will continue to further trace the genetic material inside the nucleus in every cell of their bodies.  They will identify cell structures and functions and the chromosomes and genes that determine Susan Odell Taylor Schoolunique traits.  They will compare animal cells to plant cells and construct a model to help them visualize the three-dimensional structure of an animal cell. Finally, the students will be given the opportunity to talk to a forensic specialist and experience DNA fingerprinting.

The final weeks of school will be filled with a variety of learning activities.    The students will be completing a comprehensive unit on the fantasy book, Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt, preparing for our end of the year play called The Universe and other Stuff, learning about DNA and getting excited for our end of the year field trip to Camp Chingachgook.

I hope you all have a great summer.  It has truly been a fantastic school year.
