News from the 3-4 Class

In the 3-4 class, we are beginning our final writer’s workshop unit called “Writing Susan Odell Taylor SchoolFiction:  Big Dreams!”  The students are so excited to finally be able to be writing in the genre they enjoy reading so much.  We began our study with a close look at how to develop ideas.  We learned that authors do not just stare up into the clouds and suddenly come up with ideas for stories about puppies, castles and dragons.  We learned that ideas come from daily experiences and small moments in their lives.  Even E.B. White got his idea for Charlotte’s Web lying on a bale of hay in his barn watching a spider spin its web.  The spider did not spell out the words “Some Pig”; however we are learning that imagination is what really matters to fiction writers.

Susan Odell Taylor SchoolWe are also busy getting ready for the Country Parade on Wednesday, May 12th.  We are learning about the various cultural aspects of Mexico.  The students have made beautiful Ojos de Dios (God’s Eyes) out of colorful yarn and are in the beginning stages of paper macheing pinatas.  We will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo in our classroom with a fiesta.  We will be cooking authentic Mexican dishes such as beef and bean burritos, homemade salsa, and guacamole.  We will be making sombreros and maracas that we will use when listening to the savory flavors of Mexican music. Please come by and visit to see all the wonderful work the students have created for the County Parade.

Science experiments have been an exciting part of our 3-4 class this year.  Ask your child about all of the wonderful discoveries of science!

Have a wonderful and restful summer!
