May/June 2010

News from the 5-6 Class

It is hard to believe that the 2009-2010 school year will soon be coming to a close. Susan Odell Taylor School It seems like only yesterday we began this amazing year of fun and learning.

The 5/6 students worked very diligently throughout the month of April as they learned about different countries around the world.  To begin this international cultural study, each student selected a country to research, write a report on and complete an oral presentation expressing their country’s unique culture.  Secondly, our class engaged in a country study on the Ukraine.  The students learned about Ukraine’s culture, geography, history, economy and symbols that represent this country.  We were also fortunate to have a Ukrainian family come into our classroom and guide us through the intricate process of creating Ukrainian Eggs, and preparing an authentic Ukrainian dish called varenyky.  These hands-on experiences were truly wonderful!

Susan Odell Taylor SchoolDuring the month of May we are starting a unit on solar energy.  The students will be learning that even though the sun is our most abundant source of energy, only a small fraction of the solar energy that hits the earth is absorbed by it, and an even smaller fraction of that amount is able to be converted to usable forms of energy, such as heat and electricity.  This unit will provide the students with the opportunity to understand what is involved in making use of this very valuable natural resource.  We will be performing a variety of investigations involving collecting, storing and converting solar energy into usable resources.

The final weeks of school will be filled with a variety of learning activities.  The students will be doing Junior Great Books, preparing for our end of the year play called The Twisted Tale of Oz, learning about solar energy and getting excited for our end of the year field trip to Camp Chingachgook.

I hope you all have a great summer.  It has truly been a fantastic school year.
