Susan Odell Taylor School for Children

Campus and Community

The Susan Odell Taylor School for Children is located on the east side of Troy in a quiet residential area, between two nationally recognized academic institutions — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Emma Willard School.

A Community of Learners
Throughout the year, our students and their families participate in a variety of activities for the purpose of building a sense of community within our school and outside our school walls. Most recently, our students have created their own recycling campaigns, participated in the 100-mile diet and fostered environmental awareness at school and at home.

Our community service projects are especially important. Through these projects, our students enrich the lives of others through generous acts of giving while learning how to be members of a supportive community and responsible citizens of the world. Taylor School students have actively supported food shelters, animal shelters, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (through its annual Math-a-thon), UNICEF, Race for the Cure, Joseph’s House and Shelter, the Bronx Zoo and our soldiers abroad. Community participation means many things — being good stewards within our community, supporting charitable causes and being active in our broader academic community. Taylor School students in the upper grades actively participate in academic competitions such as Capital Region Odyssey of the Mind, Olympics of the Visual Arts, the Invention Convention and Lego Robotics. Taylor School student teams have place 1st, 2nd and 3rd in these competitions.

Learning Environments Matter
Since opening its doors in 1998, the Taylor School has consistently created learning spaces that are healthy, safe and engaging. In 2007, the Taylor School put an addition on the original building creating a new entrance and security system, expansive entry hall, reading nook and two new classrooms. In 2008, the school installed a new, energy efficient boiler, renovated two bathrooms, installed a new floor, and made other aesthetic upgrades.

Our campus serves children in preschool, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, and first through sixth grade. Our early childhood education wing is its own unique community of young learners. Children in our early childhood education programs are in cozy learning environments where engaged teachers, assistants and administrators all play a part in overseeing a successful arrival and day of learning, and a happy departure at the end of each day. Creating a nurturing learning environment is a priority at the Taylor School. Positive learning environments foster creativity and learning, and lend themselves to cultivating a strong and highly engaged learning community.

Committed to Reflecting the Diversity of our Community
The Taylor School knows that a diverse community of people includes a range of origins, thought processes, talents, and abilities that, like diversity itself, is always changing. We actively call upon these differences to enrich our learning community every day.
