Preschool

The Susan Odell Taylor School for Children offers a developmentally appropriate, child-centered program for children who will be three by December 1 of the school year. We offer half and full day options within a 3 day or 5 day week.

Preschool children thrive on a sense of rhythm to their day, which enables them to feel secure and consequently, learn and grow within their environment. Our typical pre-school schedule is made up of different activities, alternating throughout the day. The schedule is predictable so children know the routine, but is flexible enough to allow for special events and changes. Within the structure of the day there is a balance of child-centered choices and group activities, as the energy level fluctuates from calm to boisterous.

In pre-school, play is at the center of our learning. We encourage exploration and play in centers such a blocks, library, dramatic play, math manipulatives, art, music, snack, science and creative movement. There are also several blocks of time for outdoor activities and free play. Teachers enhance play by offering supportive materials and suggesting new ideas at appropriate times, but it is important for children to self-direct their play.

The daily schedule in preschool includes Exploration, Group Meeting, Activity Centers, Snack, Show and Tell, Read Aloud, Recess, Rest Time, and Lunch. In addition, our preschoolers go to Gym, Music, and Creative Movement.

Our preschool classroom is a joyful place where children are nurtured as they grow and learn about themselves and their world.
